Discover how to use this innovative new metal for your work. Argentium Sterling is an alloy that is at least 92.5% pure silver. This material does not firescale, is highly tarnish resistant, is more malleable and ductile than traditional sterling, fuses, welds, and granulates more easily than traditional sterling or fine silver, and can be hardened using a kitchen oven or kiln. During this course you will learn a variety of techniques including annealing, soldering, fusing, granulating, and hardening Argentium Sterling Silver sheet and wire. Following demonstrations, you will have time to make your own technical samples and/or finished work. This class is appropriate for students with basic metalsmithing skills as well as professionals.

Spiculums and Anticlasting
Metalmorphosis Studio, Fort Lauderdale, FL
http://www.sjlmetalart.com/sjl_metal_art/workshops.html
Spiculums are elegant, strong, and light hollow forms that can be used to make lyrical jewelry (as well as hollowware and sculpture). Learn two ways to make spiculums. First, the method that Heikki Seppa developed will be taught: form a tapered tube, solder the seam, and then bend the spiculum. After learning how to use hammers with anticlastic (also called sinusoidal) stakes to form anticlasticly, students will be ready to close the anticlasts into “open seam” spiculums.
This class is appropriate for students with basic metalsmithing skills as well as professionals. Students who have never hammered metal will learn to hammer comfortably, and with control. Experienced metalsmiths will be able to review basics, and then build their skills.Silhouette Dies for Beads and Hollow Forms February 24, 2012 - February 26, 2012
Metalwerx, Waltham, MA Learn to make and use silhouette dies, which create forms that are perfectly matching opposites using the hydraulic press. This technique is great for creating beads, pendants, lockets, containers, boxes, or even bud vases. We'll look at how we can use the same die to make different one-of-a-kind pieces, or multiple beads/units for a bracelet or necklace, or make a series of related designs.
There are several ways to make a die reversible! This course will demonstrate both "low-tech" methods as well as use of the Knew Concepts Precision Saw Guide. Demonstrations will also include: a simple way to neatly solder together matching halves so that there is minimal clean-up; how to know which thickness and hardness of urethane to use; how to use a form box to create deeper forms; using commercially available dies; and embossing. If students are interested, how to make a blanking/cutting die will also be taught.
This workshop will begin with an overview of how to use a hydraulic press safely, so this class is appropriate for students with basic metalsmithing skills but no experience with the hydraulic press, as well as experienced jewelers and metalsmiths who want to create more complicated designs.
