WORKSHOPS |
Learn to use the newest Bonny Doon tools for the hydraulic press that facilitate creative new metal forming techniques. Students will form copper synclastic and anticlastic bracelets samples with Bonny Doon synclastic forming tools, and anticlastic forming set. Using urethane pads and the restraining ring system, students will practice forming and deep drawing 3-inch diameter metal discs into seamless cylinders. The cylinders can be hammered into other forms - vessels, containers, pendants, or sliced to make seamless rings, which can also be re-formed on the press. After some exploration, participants may choose to work in silver. Prerequisite: Successful completion of the course Basic Jewelry Skills or equivalent experience - knowledge of soldering techniques and skill in using a gas-fueled torch. A materials list will be provided upon enrollment.
Created for people who want to become comfortable working with Argentium® Sterling Silver sheet and wire, this workshop will teach a variety of techniques including annealing, soldering, fusing, and hardening. Argentium Sterling has superb fusing qualities, so demos will include fusing granules to sheet, sheet to sheet, wire to wire, kum boo, and gold to Argentium Sterling. It is also possible to create three-dimensional sculptures, fusing the Argentium Silver wire as if it were welding rod. Following demonstrations, participants will have time to make their own technical samples and/or finished jewelry projects during the class. Students with basic jewelry and metalsmithing skills, as well as professionals are welcome.
Cynthia Eid, an internationally recognized metalsmith for over 25 years (www.cynthiaeid.com/), has been working with this alloy for more than 6 years and is the author of the technical guide to Argentium Sterling published by the Society of North American Goldsmiths in SNAG News July 2005. This exciting metal is a new sterling alloy that is at least 92.5% pure silver. It does not firescale, is highly tarnish resistant, is more malleable and ductile than traditional sterling, and can be precipitation hardened using a kitchen oven. It is ideal for many large and small scale silver projects. Estimated material fees payable to instructor will be provided closer to registration.
